Also... audiobooks.

One other project I'm working on right now is taking the 11 Captain Disaster short stories that I wrote years ago, reworking them slightly and then recording them as audiobooks.  The first episode is almost done.  More information here.

Captain Disaster: The Dark Side of the Moon now on Itch

For those who like PDF rather than Mobi, I have released the short story Captain Disaster: The Dark Side of the Moon on Itch.io.  It's slightly cheaper than the Kindle version at $1.25, and there's also a free chapter available.

Captain Disaster sleep-walks his way onto a moon with a terrible secret. Will he escape the danger, find help from the moon's inhabitants, and manage to endure the many dreadful puns, and manage to get back home?

This short story of 10.5K words is based on the point and click adventure game of the same name, but with a few differences thrown in to make things more interesting, and to include more character interaction. The humour never leaves the page but this is also a story with heart. Fans of classic science fiction books, movies, TV series etc will spot numerous references - some subtle, some less so - including Dr Who, Terrahawks, Star Trek and many others. There are several references that point and click adventure game fans will recognise too.

In summary, ideal readers of this ebook will be sci-fi fans who like a laugh, don't take things terribly seriously and ideally are also fans of the point and click genre.

Come to the DARK SIDE! ... of the Moon.

Captain Disaster: The Dark Side of the Moon will be free for 3 days, from 5th to 7th October 2017.  Get it now!

As always, if you read it and enjoy it, please leave a review.  For what it's worth I feel that the writing in the game and this short story is among the best I've ever written.

Reviews on Amazon UK:

"I have to give it five stars for the originality and humour."

"A short and humorous tale that fans of comedy sci-fi will certainly appreciate, don't hesitate to give it a read!"

(Both 5-star ratings.)

Free promo continues today

Well due mainly to quite a few Twitter buddies answering my call for help in advertising my free promo, it's been going rather well so far - certainly better than previous efforts.  The Captain Disaster Collection has managed to achieve Top 10 in the category Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Anthologies & Short Stories in both the US and UK stores.  (Admittedly this is an extremely low competition area but it's still rather pleasing!)

Hoping for some more downloads today to consolidate top ten status.

I'm enormously grateful to anyone who downloads either or both ebooks and especially anyone who does so and then leaves a review!

New Captain Disaster short story named

I've finally decided on a name for the new Captain Disaster story - The Wilder Gene.  3.5K words down, probably aiming at around 8-10K in total.

Here's another extract:

A group of aliens of many shapes and sizes started lumbering towards them, weapons at the ready.   CD gave Zero-Bit some instructions and ran out of the ship, rolling and diving as the aliens began taking pot shots at him.  Disaster Area lifted off and moved in the other direction.

CD ran faster than he’d ever run, except possibly when being chased by the giant mutated cheeseburger on Deepfriedicus-4, and just managed to hurl himself behind a large rock as laser blasts fizzed past him.

“Ah, hello there” said a voice.  Captain Disaster looked up and saw that the voice emanated from a well-built man who looked like he was probably a soldier of some kind, but not dressed in battle fatigues.  He spotted Storm Trooper armour nearby and flinched involuntarily.  Duke smiled.  “Oh don’t worry about that, my days of supporting an evil galactic empire are over, man.  My and my man Travis are best buds against the dark forces that plague the galaxy.”

He nodded towards Twavis, who nodded.  “Wwe wwon’t let them get awway!” he cried.

“Nice…” muttered CD.  “But do you have any idea how to get rid of this lot?”

Extract from WIP Captain Disaster story

Haven't decided on a title for this story yet - it's about (at a guess) 15-20% done so far.  More news soon, in the meantime here's a little snippet from the start of the story:

Captain Disaster was bored.  He’d had so many adventures by now that any time spent not on an adventure felt like a relief for all of five minutes, and then he missed the excitement for as long as it took for the next nerve-jangling, life-endangering escapade to take place.   CD himself and his entire worldwide fan base – yes, all three of them – had awaited this moment.

Now it had come.

Unfortunately, it had come in the form of The Celestial Warriors, a band of lunatics who wanted to cleanse the galaxy of humans.   Since our lovable captain loosely fitted the criteria for “human”, they were currently trying to destroy his ship.

“Will the Picard Manoeuvre be of any help here?” enquired ZD.

Zero Bit was concentrating on evasive actions so it took him a while to reply.  When he’s managed to get a small asteroid belt between them and the Warriors, he replied “sadly not, Captain.  Still, we appear to have managed to lose them for a moment.  It will take them a while to navigate that asteroid field.”

“What’s up with these Celestial Warriors, anyway?  They sound like an American Football team.”

“It’s a bit of a misunderstanding.  They watched The Matrix and thought it was a documentary, and ever since have viewed the human race as a virus.  Ever since then they have viewed it as their Quest to rid the Galaxy of the human race.”

After a small intermission during which Captain Disaster rolled around and took his shirt off, ZB piped up “Ah.  It would appear they have caught up with us”.

Excerpt 3 from The Damaris Touch

The chamber visibly darkened and there was an extremely acrid smell of cabbage.  CD pondered that he had no idea how the chamber was lit, but right now it seemed that this might not be the most important issue at hand.

“VERY WELL, IMPUDENT CREATURE!  I WILL GIVE YOU SOME OF MY EARTH TO TAKE AWAY... IF YOU CHOP OFF TWO OF YOUR LIMBS.”

Damaris thought about this for a moment.  “Done.  I can live without them.”

But the planet wasn’t finished.  “AND YOUR HEAD!”

“Again with the exclamation marks...” muttered Damis.

“No deal.  I need my head.  But perhaps you would take the head of one of my friends?” asked Damaris.  “They don’t appear to use them very much anyway”.

“What friends?” asked the other 3, appalled that she would make this suggestion.

Excerpt 2 from "The Damaris Touch"

“Hi, I’m Damaris” said Damaris, extending what was possibly a hand but was definitely a limb of some kind.   Her voice had that special quality you normally associate with distressed cats.  CD didn’t notice.  As has been noted by others in the past, love is deaf as well as blind.  Love at first sight is also dumb.

CD pulled himself up to his full height, which wasn’t actually very tall but hey you can’t have everything, and prepared to impress.  “The name’s Disaster.  Captain Disaster.  Bacon, not blurred.”  He was as smooth as an oily fish, and nearly as attractive.

“We… um… well you see, we had a bit of an accident with our space ship, and we wonder if you might be able to help.”  Damis gestured towards their ship, with its undercarriage firmly planted in solid gold.

“We would be ever so grateful if you could help us, brave and handsome captain” rasped Damaris, putting on her best duck face.  Eventually her best duck got tired of this and flew off, but she was still pouting underneath.  A disturbance could be felt in the Force, almost as if a similar joke had been used in the near proximity.

Released! Captain Disaster: The Damaris Touch

Answering distress calls can be a tricky business, as Captain Disaster has found out before - but he's a good-hearted individual so of course he answers yet another one. At first there doesn't seem to be any danger, just a couple of odd aliens with a unique business plan - but things soon take a turn for the worst as it emerges that they are not alone on the planet.

Dark Side will be FREE this Friday (20th Jan)

The poll split the votes between my two Captain Disaster ebooks, so Dark Side of the Moon will be free this Friday.

Apparently Collection isn't currently eligible for a free promo, I've already used up my free days for this period.  (So why not just buy it already?!  You know you want to!)
